Hakone

We are back from our Hakone trip! Hakone is a city up in the mountains, about 90 minutes south of Tokyo. We took the 8 am Romance Car (fast train). We visited the Hakone Open-Air Museum and then Yunessun, the family onsen. We also saw one of Emily's friends from school there with his family. Coming home was a little harder. Our train back to Tokyo was cancelled because there had been some sort of emergency stopping for a different train, which caused major delays and some cancelling. We ended up catching a local train to another city, and then finally got another Romance car. It ended up taking 3 hours to get home. But we loved Hakone! This was my favorite day trip so far we have done in Japan.

So why is the fast train called the Romance train? Curious!??!

To be specific, this train is one of many limited express trains in Japan. They all have different names, depending on their destinations. This one is just blessed with a funny one. These trains are not to be confused with the Shinkansen, which is the bullet train.

The only thing I can say is that Japanese-English doesn't always make sense. That is, they actually say the english word, but it has a different meaning. For example, when they say "naive", it actually means "reserved (as in shy)" in Japanese. And even better, "smart" means "thin". ;-)

If Haruyo reads this, she may know if there is a reason for that name...
